The Straw, the Coal, & the Bean
October, 2015, NYU Game Center - Game Design I
The Straw, the Coal, & the Bean is a game based on the Grimms' Fairy Tale of the same name. We were tasked with reframing this narrative in to a board game.
What is most interesting about this game is the moving river. Players, at the end of each turn, roll a die to determine which lane they will start forcing the river to flow. This can be done to help yourself, or hurt others, allowing you to play as a god-like character.
Based on the Grimm fairy tale, we were able to mechanically represent each character. All of this came together to create a strong sense of story as you work to get your characters across the river.
